SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

 What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction, also called Spiritual Companioning, is a traditional ministry within the Church where a person trained in theology and spiritual direction skills, companions another on his/her faith journey. This ministry provides a safe setting to talk about our relationship with God and to search for meaning and purpose in life.

Where does one begin? Individuals come to spiritual direction with different needs and/or questions in their hearts.

Experiencing a personal crisis?   Longing to reconnect with God in a deeper way?  Discerning a new direction in life?   A desire to deepen ones prayer?

What is the format?  Spiritual direction is usually held once or twice a month by individual appointment.  Sessions are held at the Spiritual Enrichment Center.

Times Available: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

THE CALL TO ADULT SPIRITUAL & INTELLECTUAL FORMATION

ITS CHALLENGE AND OUR RESPONSE

Pope Benedict XVI has written of the need for all adult Christians to reflect and study and so become more aware of the uniqueness and absolute value of Christianity.  This appeal is made in light of the very rapid de-Christianization that is under way in the West and with particular concern for the young who are its true victims. Not only are the young insufficiently catechized but countless cultural forces are shaping them according to moral platitudes that are certain to lead to confusion and unhappiness in their adult years. This process of de-Christianization can only be reversed if Christians find the moral and intellectual wherewithal to proclaim Christian truth convincingly.

Christianity has always affirmed its uniqueness and absolute values, but today within the hearing of the many cultures and religious traditions of the world, this claim seems both absurd and offensive. Embarrassed by this situation many Christians have chosen the line of least resistance, and no longer claim the uniqueness of Christianity.

Since Christianitys truth claims are rooted in the faith that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Light, they cannot be proven. The most convincing evidence of their validity is the existence of faithful Christians who know and practice the tenets of their faith. Even the most imperfect but practicing Christian can encourage in others especially in the young respect and understanding of the Christian faith.

If the trend of de-Christianization is to be countered, Christians today need to acquire a deeper understanding and familiarity with the faith which they proclaim. To meet this need, we at the Spiritual Enrichment Center have scheduled in the coming year three programs -

  1. To help the individual Christian to grow in his/her personal relationship with Christ, i.e. the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius.

  2. A series of six (one each month) Theological Presentations on Contemporary Issues.

  3. Contemplative Prayer Meeting every Monday evening from  7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Enneagram

The Enneagram is a very ancient spiritual tool, developed over centuries and very popular in spiritual circles today. It helps us to meet the Lord. It does this by helping us recognize the blocks, the biases and the compulsive ways we have of looking at life and which ultimately prevent us from meeting the God within.
The Enneagram helps us to know ourselves and to read and receive reality objectively. Today, because there are many religious movements in the world, knowledge of self is profoundly necessary.

No one can know God who does not know him/herself. Meister Eckhart:
